Southern Right Charters is welcomed as the latest addition to the FTTSA family.
FTTSA certifies Southern Right Charters whale watching in Hermanus, the capital of the Cape Whale Coast. For the last decade, Southern Right Charters as a licensed permit holder has operated boat based whale watching under the ethos and motto of ‘Observing NOT Disturbing.’ For them the safety and conservation of whales and marine life is principal. Under this ethos they believe it is their obligation to ensure the service offered is informative and educational.
FTTSA certification is an independent endorsement of fair and responsible tourism practice in South Africa. It is based on adherence to specific criteria including fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practice, and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. The FTTSA certification mark signals to customers that certified businesses are run in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and that staff and communities linked to the operation receive tangible and positive benefits from tourism.
Southern Right Charters focuses on balancing two elements which they regard paramount – maintaining and preserving their employees’ passion for what they do and ensuring guest satisfaction. This balance is achieved through conducting operations in a professional andresponsible manner at all times.
Southern Right Charters endeavours to keep its environmental impact at the lowest possible point in all facets related to their operation. Their catamaran, ‘Miroscha’, was purpose built with the safety of marine life in close proximity of the boat in mind. They are compliant with environmental and conservation regulations in addition to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for employees and guests. They are long-time supporters of the International Fund for Animal Welfare and assist with marine research and development through continuous monitoring and recording of all whale sightings and activity for Marine and Coastal Management.
Southern Right Charters and its crew are committed to social upliftment within the local community of the Overberg through actively supporting a wide range of community projects and developments. Where possible, these projects are focused on raising conservation awareness through collaborating with local funds and educational school initiatives.
In addition, the company assists with on-going donations to local charities and funding of local entrepreneurs, the clearest demonstration of which was the interest free financing of the purchase and staff training for three chat centre containers to be run as small businesses within the local underprivileged community by community members.
When asked how it feels to be FTTSA-certified, Gail Alcock, Member of Southern Right Charters, said:
“It is great! To be validated by such an internationally recognised organisation is a true testament of what we are all about. The thorough and fair accreditation process also provided us with a clear and tangible overview of our operation which has assisted us in setting goals and further improving our business ethic and operation.”
