In 1999, Southern Right Charters started boat-based whale watching in Hermanus, South Africa. We set down roots in the town’s New Harbour, and ‘The Whale Shack’ booking office and operations centre officially opened its doors, our boat at the time was a small 10-seater ‘Chukkie.’

Fast forward to present day, much has changed in terms of infrastructure with continuous upgrades but our ‘gees’, passion & ethos is the constant.

With multiple vessel upgrades over the years, we currently operate with our custom designed catamaran, ‘Miroshca’ – with a stringent preventative maintenance program in place, regular service intervals and an in-house engineering team – safety and consistency is an essential part of our service.

Over the years our ‘Whale Shack’ has received a couple of makeovers expanding what once was a small kiosk to the modest Welcome Centre it is today, which includes outdoor seating, life-size model of the Southern Right whale, restrooms and private floating jetty to embark and disembark the boat.
