We can confirm that the whale season in Hermanus has officially begun!

Southern Right Charters went out on our first whale watching trip of the season on the 2nd of June 2012. With high spirits and lots of optimism we headed off into the big blue, not sure about what we were going find, however sightings definitely did not disappoint!

We had a mating group of 4 Southern Right Whales in close proximity of the boat and then also spotted another 2 Southern Right Whales and a couple of Brydes whales during the trip.

To date we have spotted more than 20 southern right whales in the bay, and encountered Humpback whales, during one of last weeks whale watching trips.

Annually the southern right whales migrate to the South African shoreline, where they mate and give birth. Over the next couple of weeks many more will arrive in Walker Bay, Hermanus. Generally, they stay until the beginning of December, while a cow with a very young calf may stay a little longer and can still be seen in January.

At this time of the year there is a possibility of seeing up to 3 species of the great whale in Walker Bay, with the arrival of the southern rights, the migrating humpback and the resident brydes whale.
