This month has seen a significant increase in sighting of Southern Right Whales in Walker Bay & Sandown Bay.
At this time of year we are lucky enough to have a chance of seeing three whale species on our trips, – the Bryde’s whale, the Humpback Whale, and the Southern Right Whale. As well as this we do on occasion see common and bottlenose dolphins, as well as many marine birds, including the Albatros, Sub Antarctic Skewer, Cape Ganet, Sooty Shearwater, Oyster Catchers and African Penguins.
But for the first time in our 11 years of boat based whale watching we enjoyed a rare sighting in Walker bay, on the 1st of July we encountered a pod of Orca, consisting of 2 males; 8 females and 2 calves.
To spot Killer Whales in Hermanus is one of the most unique and exciting experiences in the history of South African whale watching.
Sightings report for July:
- 137 Southern Right Whales which includes our first sighting of a calf for the season
- 25 Humpback whales
- 12 Orca whales
- 7 Bryde’s whales
- 1 pod in excess of 1000 Dolphins
