On Saturday the 15th of September, Southern Right Charters took to the cliffs; sea and surrounding areas of the New Harbour in Hermanus to assist in the worldwide initiative to ensure a cleaner ocean.

With clipboards and bags we were geared and ready for our cliff path walk, the two hour scenic walk resulted in 17kg of waste collected for International Coastal Cleanup Day. Over the past week we have stationed additional bins in the New Harbour and implemented a daily harbour clean up, removing flotsam and debris from the Harbour and slipway by boat.

BLOG ENTRY FROM OUR CURRENT MARINE INTERN

“The first three weeks of my internship with SASC and SRC have been a blast and I can’t believe that I have already been here for almost a month!”

In such a short period of time I have already been able to get up close and personal with all three major whales species of the Western Cape, two species of dolphin, and a multitude of Cape fur seals and Jack ass penguins.

Every day we see something new and exciting! The best trip so far was when we recently came across a bait ball of anchovies being swarmed by hundreds of common dolphins, a handful of seals, a variety of coastal bird species, and two massive Bryde’s whales.

I can’t wait to see what happens next!- Greg Hoffman
