Through June to December Hermanus teems with extraordinary marine life as different species of whales cross our waters on their migratory paths. Southern Right Whales can be spotted in Walker bay throughout this period as they frolic, mate and give birth.
The short window period to spot Humpback whales is between June and August, with this coastline being a stop on their migratory route.
Bryde’s whales can be seen all year round in Walker bay as they are residents of the area, but it’s best to find these creatures near feeding areas as they are avid hunters of sea fish such as Sardines and Pilchards.
In order to get the most out of your experience observing the whales in their natural environment, boat trips are offered during all of these time periods like the Miroshca which departs at 09h00, 12h00 and 15h00 each day. Passengers are requested to be at the Whale Shack 30 minutes before we depart so that our knowledgeable crew can explain our safety regulations and prepare you for the upcoming animal encounter.
Your whale watching in Hermanus experience can last from an hour and a half up to three hours, depending on the travelling time to the whales, giving you maximum exposure to all of the marine life that Hermanus has to offer as well as plenty of time to delight in your encounter and take photographs to remember each moment by.
