Education & Awareness
As a responsible whale watching operator, we highlight the conservation of whales & all marine life, during every tour. We believe it is our obligation to make our tours informative and educational.
Our Great Oceans Initiative (#GO) incorporates various satellite socio and environmental campaigns such as #GOwalk ~ Coastal & Ocean Cleanups; #GOTalk ~ Hosting & presenting presentations on the ocean and its inhabitants & #GOgetinvolved ~ where the Southern Right Charters team gets out, finding like-minded ‘good stuff’ happening in our local community where we can get involved.
Southern Right Charters regularly collaborates with local organisations to assist in marine mammal research and have developed our own in-house Whale Re-sighting Programme.
During the whale watching season Southern Right Charters has an appointed crew member on-board to constantly monitor and record all cetacean sightings and activity. All records are submitted to the Department of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries which assists with marine research and development.
Southern Right Charters strives for minimum environmental impact and maximum conservation of our local marine life.
Our Environmental Plan is focused on conserving resources; reducing pollution; lowering emissions; recycling, waste-reduction and incorporation of renewal resources.
Our aim is to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and that staff and communities linked to the operation receive tangible and positive benefit from tourism. Various local & international institutions have certified and accredited Southern Right Charters as a responsible operator such as Fairtrade in Tourism South Africa; Climate Neutral Group, World Cetacean Alliance & Blue Flag WESSA for sustainable boating.
To manage our contribution, impact and sustainability and ensure a balance is no easy feat!
What keeps our company sustainable is also our biggest asset ~ our ‘Crew’ ~ all employees are essential pieces of an intricate puzzle that ensures the optimal running of our eco-tourism company.
Investing in Local Community & Supporting Tourism
Southern Right Charters innovatively invests in and supports a wide range of community projects. We are big on #LOCALisLekker and try to get involved and participate in our community.
We aim to build a long-standing relationship with the local organisation and endeavour to get more involved to ensure a substantial impact on community upliftment versus simply contributing with a cash donation. The sourcing and purchasing of equipment ourselves not only ensures that the funds are used for the intended purpose but means staff participation and inclusion. This results in social responsibility awareness amongst our employees, a bond with local community and sustainability.
